A Structured Residency Pathway for Capitalised Investors
The Italian Investor Visa provides residence through one qualifying investment, with programme approval obtained before capital is committed.
Qualifying Investment Routes
Applicants select one qualifying category. The two principal private-capital routes are:
The statutory framework also provides €1 million philanthropic and €2 million government-bond categories.
Approval Before Capital Deployment
The application is assessed before the qualifying investment is made. Once approval and the entry visa are obtained, the applicant enters Italy, applies for the residence permit and completes the investment within the prescribed period.
What the Italian Investor Visa Provides
A qualifying investment provides access to Italian residence, European mobility and a renewable long-term residence framework.
Italian Residence Without Full-Time Relocation
The residence permit allows the holder to live in Italy without requiring full-time relocation. The qualifying investment must remain in place for the permit to be maintained.
Schengen Mobility
Italian residents can travel throughout the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period outside Italy.
Family Reunification
Eligible family members may join the principal applicant under Italy’s family-reunification rules, subject to the applicable relationship and dependency requirements.
Renewable Residence Permission
The initial investor residence permit is issued for two years and may be renewed for subsequent three-year periods while the qualifying investment is maintained.
Access to Healthcare
Residents may register for access to Italy’s healthcare system, subject to the applicable registration, residence and contribution requirements.
Potential Long-Term Settlement Pathway
Long-term residence may become available after five years, subject to the relevant residence and eligibility requirements. Italian citizenship may generally be considered after ten years of legal residence.
Tax Residence Is a Separate Decision
Holding an Investor Visa does not, by itself, determine Italian tax residence. Investors who intend to relocate may separately assess Italy’s tax regimes for new residents, including the lump-sum regime for qualifying individuals.

Where Most Commercial Investors Begin
Investors seeking a commercial allocation rather than a philanthropic donation or sovereign-debt holding generally compare the €250K startup and €500K company routes. The appropriate category depends on risk tolerance, preferred capital structure, liquidity requirements and the availability of a qualifying investment.
Qualifying capital may also be provided through a company controlled by the applicant, subject to ownership and source-of-funds documentation. Learn how company-origin capital can be used.

Discuss Available OpportunitiesThe Italian Investor Visa Application Process
The programme follows an approval-first structure. Applicants obtain committee clearance and an investor visa before deploying the qualifying investment capital.
Approval Before Capital Deployment
The application identifies the proposed investment and recipient, but the qualifying capital is not transferred before the programme application has been approved.
Assess the Applicant and Select a Route
Confirm basic eligibility, investment objectives and source-of-funds position. The applicant then selects one qualifying category and identifies the proposed investment recipient.
Prepare and Submit the Nulla Osta Application
The online application includes the applicant’s passport, professional history, proposed investment, proof of available funds, evidence of lawful source and the recipient’s consent.
Receive Committee Approval
The Investor Visa for Italy Committee ordinarily issues its decision within 30 days once the application is complete. If approved, the applicant receives the Nulla Osta electronically.
Apply for the Investor Visa
The applicant has six months from issuance of the Nulla Osta to request the investor visa from the competent Italian embassy or consulate.
Enter Italy and Apply for Residence
After entering Italy with the investor visa, the applicant applies for the two-year investor residence permit within eight days of arrival.
Complete and Maintain the Investment
The full qualifying investment must be completed within three months of arrival and evidenced through the official portal. It must then be maintained throughout the permit period to preserve residence and support renewal.
Published timeframes assume a complete application. Requests for supplementary documentation, consular appointment availability and local residence-permit processing may affect the overall timetable.
