The Solution

The key active ingredient in this proprietary tonic inhibits the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, viruses and fungi. It can bind to free iron, which is essential for the bacterial growth.

• Iron Chelation: The active ingredient’s primary mechanism of action against Xylella Fastidiosa – the bacteria killing most of Italy’s olive trees – involves its ability to bind iron, making this essential nutrient unavailable to the bacteria. This deprivation affects the bacteria’s metabolic processes and its ability to form biofilms, which are crucial for its survival and pathogenicity in plant hosts.
• Biofilm Inhibition: Biofilms are protective environments that the bacteria create to shield itself from environmental stresses and host immune responses. In the case of Xylella Fastidiosa, biofilms are critical for colonizing and infecting plant tissues. By inhibiting biofilm formation, the active ingredient could potentially help reduce the virulence and spread of the bacteria.
• Advantage Over Other Agents: The active ingredient offers the advantage of being a natural and less harsh alternative to heavy metal treatments currently being used to try and contain Xylella and other plant pathogens, and will not bioaccumulate in the soil.

Its application could be part of an integrated pest management strategy, potentially in combination with other treatments.
